La pequeña explosión de punk de Chicago, Allister fue formada en 1995 Tim (cantante /baterista) y Johnny(guitarrista), los compañeros de clase de mucho tiempo que primero formaron una cover band para tocar en la escuela. El dúo se amplió a un trío el año siguiente después que Johnny conociera al bajista Skippy en una una clae de matemáticas emn la Universidad de Illinois, y a principios de 1997 el grupo tocó su concierto bajo su nombre original, Phineas Gage. En la primavera ellos se bautizaron como Allister en honor de un carácter del programa de niños "You Can't Do That on Television" . A mediados de 1998, Skippy asumió la segunda guitarra después de la adición de bajista Scottie; el disco "Dead Ends and Girlfriends" siguió un año más tarde, y cuando Allister firmó para la etiqueta MCA, el disco fue reeditado a escala nacional a finales de 1999
